According to data compiled by How India Lives, in April 2021, rural areas contributed close to half (44.1 per cent) of all new cases in the country, compared to 40.8 per cent in urban areas. In the first four days of May alone, rural India’s contributed 1.39 times the number of new cases as urban areas. India’s vaccination campaign, which has covered less than 2% of the population so far, has not reached many who need it most.

Compared to the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, this year has witnessed a rapid rise in the number of infections and deaths in rural India. An estimated 65 per cent of the country s 1.3 billion population lives in rural areas.
