I have always loved the ocean, and aspired to study the creatures that inhabit it. I am a scuba diver in the Pacific Northwest part of Annie Crawley’s Dive Team. Learning to dive has been extremely influential in my understanding of the ocean’s importance to the world. I love exploring with my team and seeing the different animals. Recently, I decided to dive deeper into my understanding of marine life and ecosystems threatened by the changing climate through taking a special scientific diving course created for my team.

EDMONDS, Wash. - As the coronavirus pandemic marches on, there is a growing concern among youth summer camps that the virus could keep them closed for a second year in a row. This pandemic took me out a lot, said 13-year-old Maxwell Clauson. Being able to come out here and learn new people. it was incredible.
The teenager said his life was changed by last year’s camp because he got a chance to see the world from below the shoreline at Edmonds Underwater Park.

During the pandemic, the group has seen interest grow in online instruction, and certification at local dive shops.
“Divers are finding adventures in their own backyards,” says Kristin Valette-Wirth, chief brand and membership officer for the group. She shares some favorite close-to-home diving spots with USA TODAY.

The smell of seaweed, the blustering wind, the sand under your feet, or the waves making a small crash on the jetty are all things you might experience when you think about Brackett’s Landing in Edmonds. One of my favorite spots at the beach is the jetty. If you want to visit the large rock structure just north of the ferry dock, you can walk out to get a better view of the Salish Sea. The jetty is very important. For one thing, it allows you to walk farther out to the water’s edge without getting wet.
