Photo: Shutterstock. From March 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021 - during the COVID-19 pandemic -  a total of 108,309 meals were delivered by staff from the Town of Brookhaven’s Senior Division, more than triple the amount of meals delivered in a normal year. One year later, the Town of Brookhaven still operates its enhanced Home Delivered Meal Program, delivering about 500 meals a day to senior citizens.    By comparison, during the prior year before the pandemic, a total of 30,902 meals were delivered to seniors through the Home Delivered Meal Program.   In March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, the Congregate Meal Program previously held at the Town’s Nutrition Centers was immediately converted to a Home Delivered Meal Program, and any senior who participated in the Town’s Congregate Meal Program was offered the opportunity to have these meals delivered to their homes by Town employees, five days a week.

Photo: Town of Brookhaven. Allied Physical Group’s newest pediatric office will be in Rocky Point. The group broke ground on construction at 346 Route 25A in Rocky Point on April 6.   Allied Physicians Group is an independent provider of high-quality comprehensive family health care services for both children and adults. The new Rocky Point location will be their 24th for Allied on Long Island, bringing the total number of offices in the NY metropolitan area to 34.    Supervisor Romaine said, “Allied Physicians Group’s new pediatric practice here in Rocky Point is an important new medical practice in our community. We have a growing number of families with young children in the area and as is the case with children, they need regular checkups as well as medical care. This new office will be convenient for families living here in Rocky Point and the surrounding area.”

Advocates Clash Over What To Do With Long Island's Trash

Long Island has a trash problem, according to environmental and community advocates. However, they don’t agree what should be done about it. The Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) endorsed this week trucking in over 1,900 tons per day of construction and demolition debris to a waste transfer station proposed in Medford. The trash would then be hauled away by railway. It’s one of three transfer stations proposed, including Brentwood and Yaphank. But CCE does not support the other two because of potential health hazards. Progressive grassroot organizations, including the Brookhaven Landfill Action and Remediation Group, are concerned that the transfer station, as well as two other similar proposals in Suffolk County, disproportionately affect low-income and communities of color. They call for the Town of Brookhaven to consider environmental justice in their approval process of permitting what to do with trash in central Suffolk County when the Brookhaven Landfill is expe
