A $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office will help Wickliffe-based Lubrizol Corp. create membranes for heavy-duty fuel cell applications.
The company s Lubrizol Corporate Ventures team will focus on improving the durability of Proton-Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells through enhanced membrane oxidation performance, a news release said. This will help reduce emissions and add hours of run time for fuel cells. Lubrizol will work with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on validation testing.

Maritime companies have a lot of options when it comes to choosing how to save money on fuel costs and work toward greater environmental sustainability.
Several of those options were discussed as part of “Decarbonization Challenges and Opportunities in Marine Transportation,” a lectern session that was part of the recent Transportation Research Board’s annual conference.
Held virtually over the past two weeks, the TRB conference is normally the world’s the largest gathering of transportation research professionals. The TRB is part of the Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
Panelists at the session on decarbonization included those from academia and government.

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Pittcon is honored to host Joseph B. Powell, Ph.D. as the 2021 Wallace H. Coulter Lecturer. The 2021 Coulter Lecture is entitled
The Industrial Laboratory for Energy and Chemicals: Past, Present, and Future.
Industrial laboratories have played a major role in innovation and commercialization of new technologies. Dr. Powell s lecture will present case studies in technology development, including enhanced oil recovery, chemical process developments with homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and advanced separations, and in biofuels and new energies. The breadth of laboratory, pilot, and demonstration plant studies required to understand underlying fundamentals and de-risk scale up will also be described.
Dive Brief:
Converting renewable energy to hydrogen as a means of long-term storage in the energy sector could hold the key to helping hydrogen achieve scale and move into the industrial mainstream, multiple experts agree.
Electrolysis costs have decreased 40% in five years, putting green hydrogen on track to achieve cost parity with hydrogen converted from fossil fuels, or blue hydrogen , according to Ajay Mehta, general manager for new energies research & technology at Shell, who spoke at a Tuesday panel hosted by GreenBiz.
Enel Green Power and other companies have begun plans for co-locating green hydrogen plants with renewable energy developments in the U.S., which according to IHS Markit is on tract to exceed $1 billion in hydrogen production within three years.
