OOSTBURG, WI (WHBL) – The Oostburg Village Board voted on Monday to hand 911 operations over to Orange Cross Ambulance, spelling a likely end to the volunteer service which has served the southeast corner of Sheboygan County for the past 48 years. The decision was met with loud objections by the audience as could be heard in a live stream on Facebook.
Oostburg Ambulance supporters had staged a vigorous campaign to save the all-volunteer service through social media and yard signs, and were hoping that the decision would be delayed until residents could look at options and then vote in a spring referendum.

OOSTBURG, WI (WHBL) – The future of Oostburg Ambulance, which serves the southeast corner of Sheboygan County, will be in the balance when the Village Board meets today to consider disbanding the volunteer service and sign over those 911 operations to Orange Cross Ambulance. That private service is based in Sheboygan and already covers the rest of Sheboygan County.
Village President Allen Wrubbel said that an ongoing volunteer shortage is making it necessary to consider the change to Orange Cross and, if approved, the operation would transition in January. But Oostburg Ambulance is hoping that the Village Board will instead put off a decision until the residents of the area have a chance to review options, and then vote on a referendum in the spring.
