MidCoast Council
MidCoast Council’s first Pedestrian Access Mobility Plan and Bike Plan has been adopted unanimously by Councillors and will now form the basis of future funding opportunities from within Council, as well as the State and Federal Governments.
The plan provides a series of strategies to improve facilities for walking and cycling across the MidCoast Council region, and thanks to consultation with community members it has been tailored specifically for individual towns and villages.
The first draft plan was created in 2019, following public consultation, and was presented to Councillors in 2020. The draft was put on public exhibition with further ideas and feedback sought from the community and these public submissions being incorporated into the final document.

Life and death aren’t usually how we think about complicated (sometimes boring) City Hall budget debates.
But when the issue is road safety, the public’s interest doesn’t end with council decisions about how our money is spent. It extends to the outcome. When the community is short-changed on road safety dollars, the consequences can be tragic.

Remote work and furlough for example have meant employees can’t meet the ‘qualifying journeys’ rule of the scheme.
In response to this, the UK Government have eased some of their rules around the scheme to coincide with the restrictions put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The existing rules around ‘qualifying journeys’
Government rules state that employees must use their bike or accessories acquired through the scheme mainly for journeys to and from work or in the course of work.
