New Delhi: A member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Chandramukhi Devi, stoked controversy on Thursday by saying that the Badaun gangrape-and-murder incident, involving a 50-year-old Anganwadi worker, could have been avoided had the victim not ventured out in the evening.
Speaking to the media after meeting the family of the victim, she said, “Even under any influence, a woman should keep track of time, and should not venture out late. Perhaps, had the victim not gone out in the evening, or gone along with a family member, she could have been saved.”

UTTAR PRADESH: National Commission for Women member Chandramukhi Devi made it to the headlines when she commented on the Uttar Pradesh s Badaun gangrape case.
According to reports, Chandramukhi Devi visited the village where a 50-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped said the incident would not have happened had the woman not stepped out alone in the evening. I feel had the woman not stepped out in the evening, or one of her children had accompanied her, the incident would not have occurred , said the National Commission for Women member.

Badaun (Uttar Pradesh) [India], January 7 (ANI): A two-member team of the National Women s Commission on Thursday met the family of the 50-year-old woman who was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Uttar Pradesh s Badaun on January 3.
Interestingly, even as the NCW team was at the house of the victim, the wife and daughter of one of the accused in the crime tried to meet the visiting delegation.
The NCW team also investigated the spot of the incident. Chandramukhi Devi, one of the members of the team, said that she isn t satisfied with the role of the police in the incident.
