Why 42% of UBCO students are food insecure, and how they re working to change that

After a pre-COVID poll found 42 per cent of UBC Okanagan students were food insecure, Casey Hamilton and her team went looking for solutions. The internal survey gathered data based on one question: In the past 12 months, have you worried that food would run out before you got money to buy more? Hamilton and three other researchers recently released their latest VOICE project, which added context to the statistics around food insecurity on campus. This qualitative study engaged students experiencing food insecurity to hear how it impacts their well-being, how they manage, and what they think UBC can do to improve food security.

(PIXABAY / FILE PHOTO) Worry not, the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) wants to help you.  The DOST-FNRI has enhanced its HELP (Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Program) Online Website, which  provides easily accessible nutrition information and tools to the public to combat obesity and non-communicable diseases, and to promote healthy lifestyle. In a  webinar on the features of the website held Friday,  Senior Research Specialist Noelle Lyn Santos of the FNRI’s Nutrition Research and Development Group said the website “was created to promote good nutrition to the public through provision of evidence-based information and up-to-date nutrition tools.”

His boss suggested he operate out of the Bangkok office or go to Australia. But this did not appeal to Dhawan.
