Law on unclaimed bodies’ academic use okayed

LAHORE: The Syndicate of University of Health Sciences (UHS) on Monday gave nod to a proposed law on provision, management and equitable distribution of unclaimed and unidentified human dead bodies for academic purposes.
This approval was given during the UHS syndicate’s 61st meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Javed Akram. The meeting was attended by VC University of Education Prof Talat Naseer Pasha, Principal Sargodha Medical College Prof Humaira Akram, Prof Nasir Shah, Prof Nadia Naseem, Dr Saqib Mehmood whereas Prof Sajid Maqbool, Prof Waheed ul Hammed and Dr Asad Zaheer participated online. Representatives of Punjab Health and Finance departments also attended the meeting.

Close to 1,200 unidentified bodies lay in Gauteng s state mortuaries last year, with more than 100 identified bodies having been buried as paupers because they had not been claimed.
Also, cases of “serious adverse events” (SAEs) in Gauteng public hospitals had risen from 4,170 in 2019 to 4,701. SAEs are events arising from the health-care environment and which may affect the medical outcome on a patient by either lengthening their stay in hospital or further complicating their condition.

KARACHI: Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) secretary Khalid Mehmood on Saturday said that every effort would be made to organise the 34th National Games in Balochistan in a time-frame that could benefit the countryâs sports.
âI donât think the Games will be held this year as Covid situation is also not good. And yesterday restrictions were also imposed on sports in Punjab. As we are going to host 14th South Asian Games in 2023 so effort will be made to host the National Games in a more suitable time-frame which could be of immense utility for our sports,â Khalid said.
