South Bend Cubs win second straight May 6, 2021

Despite being held to two hits on Wednesday night, the South Bend Cubs scraped out a hard fought 4-3 victory to move to 2-0 on the season. The Cubs registered their 11th straight win dating back to last season.
It was a double dip of debuts on the mound as the number four overall pick from the 2020 draft, Asa Lacy, took the mound for the River Bandits in his first appearance in professional baseball, and Chris Kachmar toed the rubber for the Cubs in his South Bend debut.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Davis Hare and Mat Nelson each hit late-inning home runs, and the FSU bullpen continued its strong weekend, as No. 20 Florida State (23-16) rallied from an early deficit for a 4-2 win over Troy (21-21) Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The win clinched the series for the Seminoles.
Each team scored just seven runs over the three-game series, which FSU won two games to one. Conor Grady continued FSU’s strong starting pitching Sunday, with a career-high 13 strikeouts with no walks. He did give up a pair of runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings.
Messick, from Plant City, Florida, set career highs with eight innings pitched and 11 strikeouts. He allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter on the evening as FSU shut out the Cavaliers 2-0.
Messick is the first Seminole with double-digit strikeouts since CJ Van Eyk did it in the 2019 ACC Tournament against NC State. His 8.0 innings pitched are the most for a Nole since Drew Parrish reached that mark in the opener of the 2019 College World Series against Arkansas.
Messick led a strong Florida State rotation in the series win against the Cavaliers. Messick, Bryce Hubbart and Conor Grady struck out 26 batters in 21 innings pitched, allowing just nine hits and walking two batters. Messick is FSU’s first player of the week of 2021 and it is his first career ACC Player of the Week honor.
