The Mid-Prairie boys basketball team boasted a high powered offense during their most recent season. A big reason why was the play of the Golden Hawk front line and their efficiency at getting buckets. The Hawks had two players finish in the top 10 in all of class 2A in shooting percentage for those who attempted at least 100 shots during the year. Mid-Prairie junior Ethan Kos finished third in the state at 66.7%, going 74 of 111 from the floor during the campaign. The Golden Hawk forward was a spark off the bench averaging seven points and five boards per night.
Mid-Prairie senior Aidan Rath was ninth in 2A at 62.4%. The Golden Hawk center was 93 of 149 from the floor. He averaged 10 points per game, ninth in the RVC south, to along with six and a half rebounds. He finished with 27 blocked shots, third in the south. Rath was named to the all-RVC south team. Mid-Prairie finished the season with a 15-8 overall record.
The Mid-Prairie boys basketball team will play it’s third game in four days today when they host the Durant Wildcats. The Golden Hawks are 12-6 on the year, 12-4 in the River Valley, second in the south, after a 59-25 win over West Liberty on Monday where they were led by Carter Harmsen’s 17 points, Aidan Rath with 12 and Alex Bean with 11. On the season, the Hawks are led by Harmsen at 20 points and seven rebounds per game. Jack Pennington has the team lead with five assists and two steals per game.
Durant comes into the night with an overall mark of 3-16 after a 65-37 loss at No. 10 West Branch on Saturday. On the season the Wildcats are led by Nolan DeLong at 14 points per game. Garrett Hollenback pulls down a team best seven boards per night to go along with two assists. These two teams met on January 12th of this year with Mid-Prairie winning 70-35 on the Wildcats home floor with Carter Harmsen scoring 19 points, Ethan Kos 16 and Alex Bean 12. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys basketball team collected it’s 12th victory of the season in convincing fashion Monday, beating West Liberty for the second time in 48 hours 59-25. The Hawks would not trail on the night, opening the game on a 12-0 run, they led 17-4 after one quarter. They would use a 19-4 second quarter run to stretch the lead to 36-10 by halftime. In the second half, the lead would grow to as many as 34 in favor of the Hawks. Mid-Prairie was dominant on both sides of the ball, putting West Liberty through a six minute first half scoring drought, an 11 minute drought from the floor and a 22 minute drought from two point range. Mid-Prairie outrebounded the Comets by 18 and forced 15 turnovers. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams are back at home Friday when they welcome the West Branch Bears to Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. The Golden Hawk girls are 9-9 on the season and 8-8 in the River Valley Conference after a 43-38 loss to Wilton on Tuesday. In that game, Mid-Prairie was led by Maddie Nonnenmann’s 16 points and Myah Lugar’s 13 points. On the season, Nonnenmann leads the Hawks with 14 points and seven rebounds per game. Amara Jones has the team lead with four assists and three steals per night.
West Branch comes into the contest with a record of 13-1 overall and in the RVC. The Bears are ranked No. 3 in class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Last time out, the Bears beat No. 11 West Liberty 46-39 with future Bradley Brave Sasha Koenig putting up 28 points. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Wilton Tuesday for a River Valley Conference doubleheader and returned with a split. The Golden Hawk girls fell in the opener 43-38. Mid-Prairie got off to a tremendous start, opening the game on a 10-0 run, only to see Wilton answer with a 14-3 run, to take a 14-13 lead in the second quarter. The second frame belonged to the defenses, with each team scoring four to leave Mid-Prairie on top 17-15 at half. While the Golden Hawk defense kept them in the game, the offense struggled, going scoreless for more than five minutes and more than 12 minutes with just one field goal in a stretch of the second and third periods as Wilton took a 27-20 lead. Late in the third, Mid-Prairie got on track as Myah Lugar knocked down the first of four consecutive three point goals to get the Hawks within 27-23.
