UNDATED – The American Red Cross is testing blood, platelet, and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The organization says the test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Testing may also identify the presence of antibodies developed after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.
The Red Cross will be holding blood donations locally in Peru on Wednesday at the Illinois Valley Chapter Donation Center from noon to 5:30 p.m. and in Streator on Friday at the Streator Reading Township Volunteer Fire Department from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

OTTAWA – The American Red Cross is continuing to test blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed COVID-19 symptoms. Red Cross antibody tests will be helpful to identify individuals who have COVID-19 antibodies and may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. They say that antibody test results will be available within one to two weeks in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. Upcoming donation events this week include Tuesday at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley and Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Princeton
PERU In honor of Black History Month this February, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors, and especially those who have recovered from COVID-19, to give blood to honor the legacies of African Americans like Dr. Charles Drew. Drew, an African American surgeon, was the medical director of the first Red Cross blood bank in 1941. Drew’s research about the storage and shipment of blood plasma proved that blood could be stored for transfusions. Many of the processes he developed are still in use today. Blood donation appointments can be made by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.
