How can you help pets when there are fireworks, thunder or gun fire?

There must have been some pretty awesome fireworks going off in our area this Independence Day because the shelter got a big influx of stray dogs in over the weekend.
Most were reclaimed the next day by their owners, but I shudder to think of what could have happened to them had they not been safely impounded.
The sound and vibrations from fireworks, thunder and gun fire are very frightening to many animals and can send them into a panic.

UPDATE:
Two South Jersey residents were charged with animal cruelty this week after a SWAT team served a warrant at their home.
Gloucester County SWAT served a “knock and announce” search warrant at a home in the 1600 block of Atkins Avenue in West Deptford Township around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to township police.
The warrant stemmed from an animal cruelty investigation conducted by West Deptford police, the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office and county animal control.
Felipe Echevarria, 33, and Brittany M. Morgan, 34, both of West Deptford, were charged with animal cruelty violations and released on summonses pending future court appearances, police said.
