AN early sighting of a butterfly at a North Yorkshire nature reserve has surpassed any previously recorded by several days. Earliest and latest sightings of butterflies are always scrupulously recorded at Foxglove Covert nature reserve at Catterick Garrison. However, none have ever been recorded as early a beautiful Peacock butterfly found fluttering amongst frozen leaves on the ground close to the reserve’s wetland only last week on Wednesday, January 27 . The adults of this species hibernate over winter, usually in dark spaces such as inside sheds or holes in trees. Folding their wings up to reveal the dull side allows them to blend in with their surroundings and rest undisturbed until spring.
