We may take for granted the plants in our front yards. However, Carolina faculty member and filmmaker Julia Haslett wants us to think about how these everyday shrubs might have unique, even dramatic, stories of their own.
In 2015, Haslett, who was born in England, was in her godfather’s garden in Scotland, working on a short film about a group of rhododendron enthusiasts. Through conversations with them, Haslett learned that rhododendrons part of a genus of more than 1,000 woody plants in the heath family were brought from China to the United Kingdom over 100 years ago by “colonial-era plant hunters” and are now endangered in China. The story inspired Haslett to expand her short film into a feature-length documentary, “Pushed up the Mountain,” that follows the efforts of tireless conservation biologists and botanists who care deeply about preserving rhododendrons in the face of a changing natural environment.
Thrilled After Solving a Vexing Problem, a friend proclaimed, “I sure Sherlocked that mystery…!”
At Least They Didn’t Start a Wildfire. Tim Flores and Nicole Westerfelt were excited to stage gender reveal ceremonies for family groups, so they purchased special party cannons that surprise onlookers with either blue or pink confetti and smoke. The first canon blast at Nicole’s mother’s place and a second ceremony at Tim’s mother’s home were greeted with cheers and applause. The couple then traveled to Tim’s father’s house NevCity. Tim asked gathered family members where they’d like to witness the canon shot. Outside, it was decided. “That’s a good idea,” Nicole announced to everyone, “because we did it inside at my mom’s house and there’s blue everywhere…!”
WALLA WALLA, Wash. â The Wild & Scenic Film Festival arrives online in the Blue Mountain Region on April 1. This is the seventh year in which the Land Trust has partnered with the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) to present the films of this extraordinary festival.
Last year, because of the pandemic, the Land Trust canceled its in-person presentation at Whitman College but instead hosted 52 films online over eight weeks that were viewed by over 3,400 guests.
This year, the festival will again be online. The premier presentation will be streamed live beginning April 1, at 6:30 p.m. During the live event, guests can enjoy the films, local food options, chat with audience members, and vie to win door prizes, all from the comfort of home.
