CHIRALA: In a surprising development, at least 13 independent candidates elected as councilors in Chirala municipality in Prakasam district. All the independent candidates were backed by former legislator Amanchi Krishnamohan of YSRC.
No other town or city in the state has seen independent candidates winning so many seats in the municipal elections of which results were declared on Sunday. Although YSRC is in a comfortable position to clinch the chairperson seat as it won 19 seats in the 32-member council, the victory of 13 rebel candidates is likely to pose more troubles to the party in the coming days.
Former MLA Amanchi fielded the rebel candidates as the party decided to extend support to the legislator Karanam Balaram who switched sides to YSRC from TDP. YSRC backed the candidates proposed by Balaram and ignored Amanchi’s strength in the town. AMARAVATI: Stage is set for the counting of votes for the 11 municipal corporations and 70 municipalities/Nagar Panchayats in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday (March 14).
The urban local bodies (ULBs) elections are being held amid a strong attack on the government by a combined opposition which has accused the ruling YSR Congress of resorting to high-handed tactics, abuse of state machinery, particularly the police, in a bid to grab the civic bodies.
Elections were held on Wednesday for 71 municipalities and Nagar Panchayats and 11 municipal corporations in the state, with 78.71 lakh eligible voters.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation went to polls after over a decade, the first after its expansion.

TIRUPATI: Madanapalle double murder accused V Purushotham Naidu and his wife Padmaja, who are said to have used dumbbells and a trident to kill their two young daughters last month, apparently treated the objects to be Lord Shiva’s ‘damruks’ and ‘trishul’. They also believed that their daughters Alekhya and Sai Divya, if ‘sacrificed’ that way, would return back to life in a purer form.
This was disclosed by the girls’ father to Nakka Rajini, the lawyer who is part of senior advocate P V Krishnamachari’s team, who met Purushotham and Padmaja at Madanapalle sub-jail before they were shifted to the mental care hospital in Visakhapatnam. It may be recalled that Krishnamachari was approached by old students of the accused parents, requesting him to provide legal assistance to the couple.

When police took Padmaja to a hospital for Covid-19 test, she refused to give her sample shouting that she herself was novel coronavirus in human form and there was no need for tests.
The police have named Naidu as accused No 1 and Padmaja as accused No 2 in the case.
