No decision yet on nationwide NRC, govt tells Rajya Sabha
The Centre on Wednesday said it has not taken any decision on the nationwide roll-out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai was replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on whether the central government had any plans to implement the NRC throughout the country. Till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare the National Register of Indian Citizens at the national level, Rai said in a written reply.
The NRC was updated in Assam under the supervision of the Supreme Court. When the final NRC was published on August 31, 2019, a total of 19.06 lakh people were excluded out of the total 3,30,27,661 applicants, which created a ripple across India.

He was replying to a question by Kerala MP Abdul Wahab.
The MP had asked if the government has any plan to implement the NRC throughout the country and if it has given any instructions to state governments about the implementation of NRC.
“Till now the government has not taken any decision to prepare National Register of Indian Citizens at the national level,” Rai said in a written reply.
Opposition parties had last year expressed opposition to the Citizenship Amendment act (CAA), NRC and National Population Register (NPR). They had also staged a protest near the Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the Parliament complex and raised slogans against the government while expressing solidarity with those protesting against NPR, NRC and CAA. The Centre on Wednesday informed Parliament that it was yet to take a decision on the countrywide rollout of the National Register of Citizens, a proposed nationwide exercise to identify undocumented immigrants. Those who identify as citizens of the country would have to furnish evidence that confirms them as Indians.
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai offered the government’s position in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on whether the central government had any plans to begin the implementation of the NRC across the country.
