Brownwood resident gearing up for 2,653-mile hike from Canada to Mexico

[Photo by Derrick Stuckly]Those driving on Austin Avenue over the past few months may have noticed a man with a large backpack walking up and down the road. That man, 43-year-old Brownwood resident Christopher Gaston, will soon begin a 2,653-mile trek from Canada to Mexico along the Pacific Crest Trail. “I’m just doing it to do it,” Gaston said. “I saw a documentary on it about 3-4 years ago called Six Million Steps. The documentary basically covered one season’s hike. It had several people that were there at the beginning and at different stages. You got to see the different perspectives of a lot of different people throughout their trail experience. After I saw that I thought that was something I wanted to do at some point.”

Authorities: Street race triggered crash that killed Judson students

Updated 5/28/2021 8:33 AM Two men were racing on Route 31 moments before the April crash that killed a pair of Judson University students whose car was struck near the entrance to the Elgin campus, authorities said Thursday. Trevon D. Morris, 21, of the 400 block of Stella Avenue in Elgin, and Kahleel L. Steele, 22, of the 0-100 block of Austin Avenue in Carpentersville, face reckless homicide and aggravated street racing charges, both felonies, Kane County authorities said.   A third person, 23-year-old Manny L. Pittenturf, 300 block of Tee Lane, Carpentersville, has been charged with misdemeanor aggravated speeding in connection with the crash. He was driving behind Morris and Steele when the crash occurred.

Two-vehicle collision at 377, FM 45

No major injuries were reported Monday morning following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 377 South and FM 45. First responders, including the Brownwood Fire Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, DPS troopers and Lifeguard EMS were dispatched shortly before 8 a.m. According to officials on the scene a silver SUV was coming into Brownwood from the south on 377 while a white sedan was turning off 377 onto FM 45 when the collision occurred. A few moments later, scanner traffic reported a minor accident at the intersection of Austin Avenue and Commerce Street that featured no major injuries. Previous Story

Schererville police, community gather in honor of fallen officers

SCHERERVILLE — Dozens gathered Friday on the lawn across from the Schererville Police Department for a prayer service in honor of fallen law enforcement officers.  Around noon, residents, town officials and Schererville police joined in prayer near the town s 9/11 Memorial to honor law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.  The prayer was led by the Rev. Lev Holowaty of Descent of the Holy Spirit Orthodox Church.  The service was a part of the department s annual Police Memorial, which is held in conjunction with National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, and National Police Week, which occurs the week in which May 15 falls, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
