Jackson leaders consider moving JPD s Precinct 4 to old Batte Furniture location

By Kayla Thompson Jul 20, 2021 | 6:15 PM JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson City leaders are considering a decision to move the Jackson Police Department’s Precinct 4 from Colonial Mart. Councilman Ashby Foote said many neighbors have expressed concern about the change. “Particularly in the last nine to 12 months as the crime epidemic has taken place, and we’ve had increasing gunshots heard in that vicinity,” he said. Police Chief James Davis said conditions are not suitable for officers at the current precinct and moving the location does not mean losing officers. “You won’t be losing any police services. We just have to find a location that is suitable for the men and women in Precinct 4,” Davis said.

Relocation of the northeast Jackson police precinct causing concern

View Comments The city is considering moving one of its four police precincts raising alarm from nearby residents fearful of surging crime, according to a Jackson councilman.  Ward 1 Councilman Ashby Foote told his council colleagues Tuesday he feared the possible relocation of police precinct four from northeast Jackson to Northside Drive would cut down on police visibility and response times.  City officials are looking at moving the precinct, located in the Colonial Mart Shopping Center on Parkway Drive, to the old Batte Furniture Building about four miles away on Northside Drive. The precinct is one of four that covers the city.

Jackson city leaders suggest reopening detention center to hold criminals

By Deidra Brisco Jul 11, 2021 | 7:20 PM JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – City leaders are trying to find a new way to keep criminals off the streets by creating more space with added holding facilities. Some council members suggest putting an old facility to good use. They want to look at the old youth detention center to be reintroduced to hold criminals. This will be for people who have committed misdemeanors. “We need to get the detention center up and running. The closer it is to the city of Jackson all the better and we need to change the message out there for the violent behavior right now. The current message I don’t think is really addressing the current situation. People need to realize those with guns especially need to realize that if they do crimes they are going to be detained and kept off the streets of Jackson,” said Ward 1 Councilman Ashby Foote.
