Palatine principal among finalists for Golden Apple leadership award Martin DaCosta

Creating an inclusive school climate begins with giving students a voice in decision-making, says Martin DaCosta, principal of Winston Campus Junior High School in Palatine.
DaCosta s students are among the most diverse within Palatine Township Elementary District 15 the state s second-largest elementary district where DaCosta is the only nonwhite principal. He values the importance of cultural relevance in teaching and creating an environment that is welcoming and inspirational for all students.
When it comes to leadership, one of the things that I aspire to be every single day is a servant leader, DaCosta said.

Golden Apple, an Illinois nonprofit committed to preparing, honoring, and supporting educators who advance educational opportunities for students, have announced the 2021 finalists for the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. 32 Pre-K through 3rd grade finalists were selected from around the state, and two of them teach at schools in Alton.
Finalists are Kate Page, a 1
st grade teacher at Eunice Smith Elementary, and Zebulon Holder, who teaches music in grades K-2 at Lovejoy, Eunice Smith, and Lewis and Clark Elementary schools. Alan Mather is the President of Golden Apple. He tells The Big Z they have been around for 36 years.
