The 31-0 Luis Nery put more than his record on the line Saturday night as he faced the 21-0-1 Brandon Figueroa in a scheduled 12 rounder for WBC and WBA super bantamweight titles. The 26 year old Nery won his WBC strap in his previous fight, in which he had bested Aaron Alameda via unanimous decision. Figueroa had won his WBA title by stopping Damien Vazquez the previous September. Saturday’s bout was held at Carson California’s Dignity Health Sports Park and was the main event of a card broadcast live on Showtime.
Both men fought aggressively in the opening round. Nery appeared to land well in the final minute of the chapter. Figueroa seemed to lunge forward with his shots a bit in the second. Show time, 9 p.m. ET). Showtime has also increased its bet on Nery-Figueroa as the winner announced that the winner will go straight to the second union Stephen Fulton Jr. against the champion (19-0, 8 KOs) on September 11th.
“It’s going to be a full-blown war from the first war,” Nery said at a recent press conference on Thursday. “People will be talking about it for a long time.”

Undefeated super bantamweight champions Luis “Pantera” Nery and Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa faced off Thursday at the final press conference before their world title clash live on SHOWTIME this Saturday, May 15 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
The press conference also featured former unified super bantamweight champion Danny Roman and hard-hitting Ricardo Espinoza, who meet in the 10-round co-main event, plus undefeated super featherweight contender Xavier Martinez and former world title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos, who duel in a 10-round showdown that kicks off the telecast at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Showtime hosts a title unification at super bantamweight between WBC champion Luis Nery (31-0, 24 KOs) and WBA “regular” champion Brandon Figueroa (21-0-1, 16 KOs). Nery was a top fighter and a KO machine down at bantamweight but had some trouble making the weight and moved up to super-bantam, where he defeated Aaron Alameda for the WBC belt. He paired up with coach Eddy Reynoso for this fight and adopted a more measured approach than he had at bantamweight. The decision win broke his 11 fight stoppage streak but the more careful style will likely make him tougher to beat.
