Former two-division champion Luis Nery has some rebuilding to do after suffering his first professional defeat, and he’ll be doing so with a new crew behind him. “Pantera” confirmed today that he’ll be working with trainer Jorge Capetillo and strength and conditioning specialist Memo Heredia.
Nery’s (31-1, 24 KO) has had something of a revolving door when it comes to his corner, previously splitting from Freddie Roach without a single fight and Eddy Reynoso after an underwhelming decision over Aaron Alameda. He’s still just 26 and clearly has a lot of career ahead of him, but he’ll need some stability to get back on track after Brandon Figueroa knocked him out last May.

Angelo Leo, right, lands a right hand to the head of Tramaine Williams during Leo’s win in Uncasville, Connecticut last August. Leo fights Aaron Alameda on Saturday in a Showtime-televised card. (Amanda Westcott/Showtime)
No athletic contest is truly a must-win situation. If Albuquerque native Angelo Leo should lose his boxing match against Mexico’s Aaron Alameda on Saturday night in Houston, the sun will still rise over Beaumont and Baytown Sunday morning.
Nor would a loss represent sunset on Leo’s career. At 27, he enters Saturday’s bout with a 20-1 record (nine knockouts) and a world title already to his credit.
