Combative super-bantams Luis Nery and Brandon Figueroa prepare for battle, writes Paul Wheeler
WHEN Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime announced their upcoming fight schedule last month, there were some appealing matchups on the list. One of which was the 12-rounder between WBC belt-holder Luis Nery and his fellow unbeaten super-bantamweight Brandon Figueroa. Both men like to come forward and let their hands go, so expect no shortage of action when they collide at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California this Saturday (May 15).
Last time out in September, the two fighters recorded victories on the same bill. Nery picked up the vacant WBC title by unanimously outscoring the undefeated but untested Aaron Alameda, while Figueroa dominated and stopped the overmatched Damien Vazquez in 10 rounds. Show time, 9 p.m. ET). Showtime has also increased its bet on Nery-Figueroa as the winner announced that the winner will go straight to the second union Stephen Fulton Jr. against the champion (19-0, 8 KOs) on September 11th.
“It’s going to be a full-blown war from the first war,” Nery said at a recent press conference on Thursday. “People will be talking about it for a long time.”

With Luis Nery set to square off against Brandon Figueroa this weekend in a Showtime main event, defending his WBC world title, Nery shares some of his final thoughts on his expectations for the bout and explains what he’s out to prove in this outing. WBC middleweight titleholder Jermall Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) has officially been scheduled for his next outing, unfortunately it won’t come against an opponent anyone’s going to get worked up over. Today Showtime announced that Charlo will headline a June 19th card in Houston, defending his world title against Juan Macias Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs).
Speaking on the upcoming bout Charlo shared these thoughts about getting back in action following his September decision win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko. It’s great to be back in the ring, headlining on SHOWTIME and defending my title in front of my hometown fans in Houston,” said Charlo. “Fighting on Juneteenth means a lot to me because there is a battle going on far greater than this. That said, I have to handle my business on June 19. Montiel is a tough, young, power puncher. I know he wants my crown, but I’m hungrier than ever and ready to put on a show for my fans. Get ready for a specia
