Last year, the Army rolled out a gender-neutral fitness test. It came after 54 percent of women failed the test last year, as compared to seven percent of men. The latest version of the fitness test, which went into effect on April 1, reportedly includes several modifications for women, according to a report by the Washington Post. For example, female soldiers are now allowed to replace a leg tuck with a plank to test their core strength.
According to the Post, the army also introduced plans to rank scores for men and women separately as they compete for promotions. 32-year-old Griest, who was one of the first two women to graduate from the Army s Ranger School, had warned in 2015, said that such a move was dangerous. The Army has officially added holistic health to its updated physical fitness doctrine. The doctrine aims to prevent injuries, increase soldiers’ lethality and be an essential component of individual readiness.
Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) was introduced on October 1 in the Army Field Manual 7-22. The manual covers the force’s doctrine on physical readiness training, said Maj. Gen. Lonnie G. Hibbard, commander of the U.S. Army Center for Initial Military Training.
As H2F takes its place in Army doctrine, Hibbard hopes to hit the ground running into the fiscal year 2021, especially as the Army Combat Fitness Test, or ACFT, is set to become the fitness test record.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Army is kicking out the leg tuck requirement.
On Monday, it ended its requirement that soldiers do at least one leg tuck where they hang from a bar and pull their knees up near their shoulders as part of the new physical fitness test, as it became clear that many troops, particularly women, were unable to do it. Now, soldiers will have the option of choosing another exercise called the plank, that also shows core strength.
That new option is just one of the changes Army leaders are making in their struggle to create a fitness test that is gender- and age-neutral, but that also doesn’t end up disadvantaging female or older soldiers who simply aren’t as strong as their younger male counterparts.
