Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 5 (ANI): Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases, the 500-bed COVID-19 hospital of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Lucknow will function from Wednesday afternoon.
Atal Bihari Vajpayeecovid hospital will be manned by medical officers and paramedical staff from Armed Forces Medical Services.
The hospital has 500 beds out of which 150 are ICU beds with ventilator facilities and 350 beds are with oxygen facility.
There will be no charges for facilities available in the hospital. Food will also be provided to patients free of charge.

Lucknow, May 5 : The crisis of hospital facilities in Lucknow will ease to an extent on Wednesday when the 500-bed makeshift Covid hospital set up by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at Awadh Shilpgram on Shaheed Path becomes operational.
The hospital will start functioning almost a fortnight after DRDO stepped in to set up the facility at the instance of Lucknow MP and defence minister Rajnath Singh.
With the addition of 500 beds, the city will now have 7,000 beds for Covid patients, though most of them are occupied.
As India battles a calamitous second wave of COVID-19, the armed forces are taking a series of measures like recalling doctors and other medical staff from key bases to help civilian authorities deal with the sudden surge in coronavirus infections.
Medical officers posted with various recruiting offices, National Cadet Corps and on staff appointments are also being recalled for their deployment in areas witnessing high caseloads, officials said.
In another move to increase the availability of doctors, the defence ministry on April 23 announced giving extension till December 31 to all the Short Service Commissioned doctors in Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) who were due for retirement.

The soldiers and veterans are being deprived of medical facilities at military establishments because healthcare professionals of the armed forces have been moved to what are being branded as DRDO hospitals.
