The Senate will push through with its scheduled hearing concerning the shootout between members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), but Senate President Vicente Sotto III said on Saturday that they will not directly investigate the incident.

Sotto clarified that the legislative inquiry set by the Senate Public Order and Dangerous Drugs on Tuesday, March 2, does not intend to delve into what transpired in the recent “misencounter” between the PNP and the PDEA, but on his proposal to create a single anti-drug enforcement agency.
“Hindi naman directly imbestigasyon ang sa amin (Ours will not be a direct investigation),” he said in an interview with over radio DWIZ.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III underscored the need for a single agency to tackle and enforce all programs against illegal drugs following the fatal shootout between members of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Quezon City.

“The misencounter between PDEA and PNP shows the wisdom and ripeness of my bill creating a united Presidential Drug Enforcement Authority,” Sotto told reporters in a message on Thursday, February 25.
Sotto referred to his Senate Bill No. 3, which seeks to establish a “Presidential Drug Enforcement Authority” to serve as the “supervising agency for the proper, more effective and efficient implementation” of the Republic Act No. 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet – Marijuana plants worth P17.4 million were seized and destroyed in eradication operations by the Police Regional Office-Cordillera from six plantations in Benguet and Kalinga recently.
Regional Information Officer Marnie Abellanida said the Benguet Provincial Police Office discovered 21,750 fully grown marijuana plants and 20 kilograms of dried marijuana stalks in Kibungan, Benguet with an estimated Dangerous Drug Board (DDB) value of P6.7 million.
Abellanida said 42,000 fully grown marijuana plants with an estimated DDB value of P8.4 million were discovered and destroyed in Bakun, Benguet,
In Tinglayan, Kalinga, Abellanida said joint operatives of the Kalinga PPO and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Cordillera Administrative Region discovered 11,000 fully grown marijuana plants with an estimated DDB value of P2.3 million.
