Call for consensus or else

Social Share “If we cannot get consensus  . . . the Government will govern.” With these words yesterday, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley entered the hot-button debate on vaccination in the workplace on a day that some workers complained they were feeling pressured to get inoculated. Mottley was responding to a question during a press conference to update the country on the COVID-19 situation and the recovery from Hurricane Elsa. She hinted that for those who refused the vaccination, there might be a cost for regular PCR tests. She said the vaccine matter is expected to be discussed next week when the Social Partnership – a tripartite grouping of Government, the private sector and labour – meets. While employers appear to be pushing for a fully vaccinated workforce, some workers believe it is their choice and have found support among some attorneys.

Employee abandoned job, says Tribunal

Social Share Edmund Bushell abandoned his job in December 2014 and was not dismissed by the Barbados Light & Power. That was the ruling of the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT) in a decision delivered by chair of the panel Emmerson Graham QC. Member Edward Bushell and Graham agreed on that position while third member of the panel, Beverley Beckles, had a dissenting opinion. Edmund, an electrical technician who worked with the company from 2000 to 2014, was represented by attorney John Collymore. Michael Koeiman appeared for the BL&P. Edmund was selected as a Barbados Workers’ Union delegate between 2012 and 2014 when the company was negotiating the Collective Bargaining Agreement.  (AC)

Bajans have to pay for quarantine stay

Social Share Barbadians returning home are to pay for quarantine accommodation. One of the casualties of Hurricane Elsa was the Paragon quarantine facility in Christ Church, which was left unfit to house arriving travellers waiting out the required COVID-19 grace period after testing. Prior to the hurricane, patients there were moved out by authorities. Based on information from the Department of Emergency Management there were 2 372 reports of damage. Yesterday, Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic confirmed the damage to the main quarantine facility, saying there would be no replacement, but rather arrivals would have to pay at the Government-approved locations. He did not address how long the facility, located near the airport in Christ Church, would be off the list of locations. (AC)
