This Florida City Welcomes Beach Season With Annual Sock Burning Festival

This Florida City Welcomes Beach Season With Annual Sock Burning Festival Meghan Overdeep Residents of Panama City, Florida, have a uniquely appropriate way of ushering in warmer weather. For 24 years running, this maritime community located on one of the largest deep-water bays on the Gulf Coast officially welcomes beach season with a festival called Blessing of the Fleet and Burning of the Socks. Yes, you read that right.    © Doug Dobos for Destination Panama City We re adding Panama City’s “Blessing of the Fleet and Burning of the Socks” celebration to our bucket lists. For this quirky event, residents gather at a local marina and join in a prayer for local fishermen and their families while a processional of boats passes. Then, for the main event, they ring in the start of flip-flop season by tossing their socks into a porcelain bathtub and watching them go up in flames!

Success of Uncle Ernie s Bayfront Bar & Grill in Panama City s St Andrews

PANAMA CITY Since reopening in October on the second anniversary of Hurricane Michael, Uncle Ernie s Bayfront Bar & Grill has remained a force to be reckoned with in the Historic St. Andrews community. Putting this back together was a monumental task, admitted Sean Lyon, who owns the restaurant with his cousin, Erin Pigneri. Being by the water, the restaurant at 1151 Bayview Ave. had suffered a ton of damage, Lyon said. But on the first weekend in February, when Mardi Gras food and drink specials with a Cajun flair reigned, Uncle Ernie s saw numbers closer to those pre-hurricane.  All of fans familiar coastal favorites, from Grouper Imperial to Key Lime Pie, that made Uncle Ernie s a destination for locals and tourists are still on the menu year-round served with a view of St. Andrew Bay.
