Isam Dart walked out of his cabin on the morning of Oct. 4, 1900, and headed toward his corral. He didnât make it.
From behind a tree 120 yards away, an assassin fired a single rifle shot that struck Dart in the breast and severed his spine. The 42-year-old Dart died almost instantly, moaning âOh my God!â as he fell.

Legend has it the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 started with Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicking over a lantern. While not nearly as famous or poetic, the source of Craig’s Great Fire of 1896 can be traced back to a sopping wet mopped floor and an overstuffed wood stove, and it was a devastating event for the young town.
On the cold winter night of February 13, all of Craig was readying itself for a Valentine’s Day masquerade ball at the town hall, then located in the middle of the 500 block of Yampa Street. In the late afternoon, janitor Clyde Eastman and some volunteers thoroughly mopped the floor and built up a roaring fire in the woodstove to insure the floor was dry for the big dance (Craig Empire 2/15/22).

Samantha Ann Bassett fronted the Roma Magistrates Court pleading guilty to one count of stealing and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm. Police prosecutor sergeant David Longhurst told the court on November 10, the defendant overheard the victim, her neighbour, saying he entered her yard and killed her cat. The following day, Bassett saw the neighbour at the Wallumbilla pool and the pair engaged in a verbal altercation before the defendant got angry and punched the victim in the head, the court heard.
