Blumhouse Reveals ‘Firestarter’ Film Production Start
With a remake announced at the end of 2019 that’s largely been quiet since then, the Universal Picture/Blumhouse version of
Firestarter revealed in the fall of 2019 some casting. The project has Keith Thomas directing it based on the screenplay by Scott Teems and now it looks like Zac Efron has boarded the project as Andy McGee while Michael Greyeyes will play John Rainbird. We’re still lacking a lot more of the cast for the film.
That said, production is underway as Blumhouse tweeted out earlier today some of the first footage from it that has them excited to get the project going.
Firestarter, which I guess we can confirm will be using at least
some real fire instead of CGI fire. Good for them! This new take on Stephen King’s 1980 novel comes from director Keith Tomas (
The Vigil), with a script by
Scott Teems (
Halloween Kills). In the film, “A young girl develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.”
That sounds like a faithful adaptation of King’s novel, which has the following synopsis:
Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson were once college students looking to make some extra cash, volunteering as test subjects for an experiment orchestrated by the clandestine government organization known as The Shop. But the outcome unlocked exceptional latent psychic talents for the two of them manifesting in even more terrifying ways when they fell in love and had a child. Their daughter, Charlie, has been gifted with the most extraordinary and uncontrollable power ever seen
Firestarter centers on an organization called the Department of Scientific Intelligence, aka “The Shop.” Two participants in their mysterious research program end up getting married and having a child. Their offspring, Charlie McGee, inherited pyrokinetic powers from her parents, who were given a low-grade hallucinogen called “Lot Six” during their college years. Now the government is trying to apprehend the young Charlie in order to harness her powerful and unique skills as a weapon.
The remake will see Zac Efron portraying the role of Andy McGee, a character previously portrayed by Golden Globe nominee David Keith. While, Michael Greyeyes has been cast to play John Rainbird, described as a relentless and powerful man who has been pushed into a violent life. The character was previously portrayed by George C. Scott in the first adaptation of the novel.

While Stephen King has worked in a wide variety of mediums over the course of his stunning and storied career, whatâs pretty remarkable is that he has spent shockingly little time in the world of comics. He has penned an adaptation of
Creepshow (which was a film directly inspired by the EC Comics he loved growing up); contributed to a special Marvel comic in 1985 called âHeroes for Hope: Starring The X-Menâ (which was made to raise awareness of hunger in Africa); co-wrote the first five issues of Vertigoâs âAmerican Vampireâ series; and has seen both âThe Standâ and âThe Dark Towerâ adaptations published⦠but thatâs the full extent of the history. Exactly why this is the case isnât clear, but fans can always hold out hope that things could change.
