Anderson County Fire Department looking for tax increase to fund new equipment, truck

Here s why Anderson County has a fire department tax levy vote May 18

View Comments The Anderson County Fire Department is asking citizens to support a tax increase that would expand its budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The department, fully funded by Anderson County taxes, is hosting a May 18 vote on a referendum that would increase the number of mils in its budget from six to 10. With a current operating budget of roughly $5.5 million, the jump would eventually provide an additional $2.5 million annually. Assistant fire chief Brian Moon said the department needs the extra money to replace aging vehicles, mandatory safety equipment for its firefighters and to keep up with the ever-increasing costs of serving the growing county. Outdated equipment can also hurt ISO ratings, he said, that hit citizens in the pocket when their insurance costs go up.

Woman charged with arson for fire at Meadow Run Apartments in Anderson

View Comments A woman has been charged in relation to the fire that happened at Meadow Run Apartments in Anderson on April 20, according to Anderson County Fire Chief Jimmy Sutherland. When the Anderson County Fire Department responded to the fire around 6:30 p.m. that evening, they saw fire coming from Jordan Kerry Dockery s apartment. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes but at least seven other apartments had smoke and water damage. Dockery was the only person injured and was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. She was charged Thursday morning with second-degree arson. As soon as the investigation into the fire began, Sutherland said the cause of the fire was suspicious. While talking to the Independent Mail today, he said the time of day and where the fire started was what deemed the fire suspicious to the department.
