March 10, 2021 Nine Noles Headed to NCAA Championships
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 15 Florida State men’s swimming and diving team qualified nine student-athletes and five relays for the 2021 NCAA Championships from March 24-27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
FSU will have 24 individual entries contested by one senior, two juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.
“We’re excited to have nine individuals qualify,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “And with all of the relays, that’s a new high since I’ve been at FSU. We’re very delighted to have so many opportunities to score points.”
Since the NCAA switched the selection process for the 2013 meet, nine Seminoles selected for individual events is the highest. FSU will also bring two relay swimmers, marking the largest squad to compete at NCAAs since 2009 at 11.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Paced by an NCAA automatic time, two top eight finishes and a school record, the No. 15 Florida State swimming and diving team concluded the 2021 ACC Championships on Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The Seminoles outscored No. 18 North Carolina (729) on the final day in order to finish in fifth place with a total of 740 points, in one of the most competitive championships in league history.
“On paper, we couldn’t catch North Carolina,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “But the guys dug deep and really killed it. It was truly an amazing last night.”
FSU earned its third NCAA automatic relay bid of the meet (200 MR, 200 FR), touching with a time of 2:50.74 in the 400 free relay behind the team of sophomore Peter Varjasi, freshman Mason Herbet along with juniors Jakub Ksiazek and Max McCusker.
Results GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Yordan Yanchev highlighted the second day of the 2021 ACC Championships for the No. 15 Florida State swimming and diving team by finishing in fifth place in the 500 free with a time of 4:16.66. Yanchev ran away with the heat one victory in prelims, clocking (NCAA B) 4:15.02, which was the second fastest time in school history behind Kyle Young’s school record of 4:14.60 set in 2009. His performance was also under the previous NCAA invited time. The Bulgarian went into finals seeded fourth, becoming the first ‘A’ finalist in the race since 2013. At night, Yanchev paced with the leaders early, but found himself in a three-way battle for fourth place toward the end of the race. Yanchev held on to finish fifth, slightly off his morning swim of 4:16.66. The team of freshman Mason Herbet, junior Izaak Bastian, junior Max McCusker and sophomore Peter Varjasi clocked an time of 1:23.91, dropping 1.69 seconds from their seeded time in order to win the second heat of timed finals.
