NEWARK, N.J. Rashanna James-Frison was 4 when her mother was killed; her father was shot and left paralyzed before she was born; and she was shuttled through the foster-care system. Luckily for the young teen, a tribe of loved ones helped lift her up along her painful journey, and this year she rose to be valedictorian of her class.
“So many odds were against her, but she pulled through with the support of family,” said Allison James-Frison, her adoptive mother and biological aunt.

NEWARK, NJ The Newark Board of Education reorganization meeting on Tuesday was deemed “historic” by district officials. Dawn Haynes was appointed as president, she is the first Muslim woman who wears a hijab to lead a school board in New Jersey. In addition, Haynes and Asia Norton were re-elected to a board with their locally-elected colleagues as well after years of being under state control.
A heavy routine has taken shape at some schools across the country.
A tragedy grips the nation often the killing of an unarmed Black man by police, but sometimes it’s a woman or a teenager and school leaders bring their students together to learn, to process, to grieve.
The conversations Wednesday, a day after a jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty in the death of George Floyd, were in some ways unique. The verdict brought a measure of relief, a semblance of accountability in a death that served as a catalyst for a massive protest movement.

NEWARK, NJ – Four candidates running on the Moving Newark Schools Forward slate are the projected winners in the city s Board of Education election Tuesday with 76 of 93 precincts reported showing a wide lead over the challengers.
On the Moving Newark Schools Forward slate, incumbents Dawn Haynes, the current board vice president, Asia Norton and Vereliz Santana received 2,590, 2,440 and 2,349 votes, (As of 10:12 p.m. on April 20) respectively, making them the winners of three-year terms on the board. Meanwhile, newcomer Gonzalez received 1,839 votes (As of 10:12 p.m. on April 20), earning him a one-year term on the board.

Newark voters on Tuesday chose candidates backed by powerful elected officials to fill four open seats on the city’s nine-member school board, according to preliminary results.
The winning candidates two incumbents, a state senator’s aide who was filling a temporary board vacancy, and a newcomer now face the monumental task of helping oversee the school system’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Part of that task involves managing the district’s $1.1 billion budget plus $84 million in expected coronavirus relief money and millions of additional dollars from the federal stimulus package.
