NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Board of Education reorganization meeting on Tuesday was deemed “historic” by district officials. Dawn Haynes was appointed as president, she is the first Muslim woman who wears a hijab to lead a school board in New Jersey. In addition, Haynes and Asia Norton were re-elected to a board with their locally-elected colleagues as well after years of being under state control.
