Lakeshore flood warning Thursday

A lakeshore flood warning is in effect for Thursday as waves, powered by gale-force winds, could bring Lake Erie waters inland. The National Weather Service issued the warning from 11 a.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday. Additionally, a gale watch is also in effect throughout the day as waves in the lake could reach 14 feet, a remarkable height for a shallow lake. According to the weather service, numerous roads and low-lying property including parking lots, lawns and homes and businesses could become inundated near the lake. Some shoreline erosion will occur. Monroe County Drain Commissioner David Thompson said he and his crew are prepared. They have large pumps hooked up and positioned at areas particularly susceptible to flooding such as Grand Beach in Frenchtown Township, North Shores in LaSalle and Avalon Beach and Bolles Harbor in Monroe Township.

According to Jonty Grinter of Katoomba, “originally the ides (C8) in the Roman calendar were the mid-month days corresponding to the full moon. In March, May, July and October this was the 15th and all other months the 13th.” John Lees of Castlecrag adds, “To the Romans ‘ides’ meant the middle of the month. Don’t forget the number of days in Roman months was not the same as for our months.” At age 92 Dorothy Bragg of Avalon Beach can still clearly recall learning, “‘In March, July, October, May, the Ides fall on the 15th day’ but as a child I never knew what ‘Ides’ meant.”
