The whiteness of indie rock matters because the participants’ poor understanding of race and unexamined privilege had a lasting effect on Solange, and it all started back in August 2009 at a free Grizzly Bear show in Williamsburg, New York. At the gig, onlookers tried to focus on the cerebral indie act but couldn’t keep their eyes on the stage. As they swayed to the band’s haunting rhythms, to the side of the stage stood Solange, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z. Punk is more than just a music genre, it s a way of life. Cher Strauberry has embraced this mantra, both as a professional skater and as a performer. She s made her mark in the skating world, taking home trophies in competitions at just 12 and donating one of her boards to The Smithsonian. Now, she s putting all of her focus into music and is ready to show the world a very different side of her through her debut solo record, CHERing is Caring coming to a streaming platform near you on June 18, 2021. We sat down with Cher to learn how she fell in love with punk, what inspired this record and what went down during her first tattoo.

When we first heard from Alice Glass, she was the lead singer of electro-clash outfit Crystal Castles the no fucks goth princess of our Riot Grrrl dreams. And she still is. But in the years since Crystal Castles, she’s transitioned from stifled collaborator and victim, to survivor and unchained solo artist with tracks like ‘Stillbirth’ and ‘Mine’ about being violently reborn. And that’s exactly what’s happened. This new Alice Glass didn’t just live through trauma she overcame it and found her power in the process.
But let’s rewind a little bit: before ‘Mine’, before Crystal Castles, and before the #MeToo revelations about the abuse she suffered from her bandmate, Glass was a shy Catholic school girl who found her way to punk rock through bands like Bratmobile and Bikini Kill.
