No charges in the incident have been announced. VSP issued on Friday an AMBER Alert on behalf of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office for 12-year-old Allie Michele Broadaway who had been last seen in Bassett, Virginia, on Friday.

The Texas man accused of abducting a 12-year-old Virginia girl that prompted an AMBER Alert had set up camp behind the child s home, according to deputies. Officials with the Henry County Sheriff s Office said Allie Michele Broadaway, who was reported missing from her Bassett home Friday afternoon, was found with 21-year-old Kaleb Christopher Merritt Saturday near a restaurant in Henderson, North Carolina. Broadaway was found safe and checked by EMS for minor injuries, deputies said. Allie is a runaway. Our investigators are down there on the way now as well as federal investigators, Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry said. She will be spoken to. We will be asking her about what happened. We will be processing the vehicle that was used in conjunction with this crime and our investigators will return Allie to her family.

February 13, 2021 UPDATE: The Virginia AMBER Alert is CANCELLED. 12-year-old Allie Broadaway has been safely located and Kaleb Merritt is in custody. HENRY COUNTY, Va. – The Virginia State Police and the Virginia Missing Children Clearinghouse have canceled an AMBER Alert after a child abducted from Henry County Friday afternoon was found safe. Few details were released but investigators confirm that 12-year-old Allie Broadaway was located Saturday and that her alleged abductor, 21-year-old Kaleb Christopher Merritt, is in police custody. The girl reportedly left her home at 2373 Reed Creek Drive in Bassett voluntarily. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office was investigating Merritt at the time of the child’s disappearance. The two had been contacting each other through social media at the time of her disappearance.
