After failing to stop a ballot initiative to expand Medicaid last year, the Missouri branch of billionaire Charles Koch s Americans for Prosperity (AFP) continued its assault on Medicaid expansion in the state. In recent months, the group has written op-eds attacking the constitutionally mandated expansion, mobilized its supporters to oppose it, and advertised online.
AFP, which has affiliates in 38 states, is Koch s premier astroturf organization, activating people to oppose public sector unions, expanded health care, and environmental standards. Its budget, which is supported mostly by the Koch-funded Stand Together Chamber of Commerce, was $57 million in 2019.

Charles Koch recently attempted a rebrand as a uniter and someone who has sincere regrets about his decades of extremely partisan political funding. Much of the legacy media was relatively credulous, but we at the Center for Media and Democracy saw right through it.

State legislative leaders and members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are spearheading many of the GOP s efforts at voter suppression in the states, especially those that saw close 2020 presidential results. More than 360 bills have been introduced in 47 states to restrict voting access since the beginning of the year, according to the Brennan Center for Justice, which tracks state legislation on voting and elections.
The Center for Media and Democracy has determined that more than 100 Republican politicians connected to ALEC in just six battleground states are lead sponsors or co-sponsors of those bills.

As the Senate moves towards a vote on confirming Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) as the secretary of the Department of the Interior next week, a question mark remains around how Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan will vote. The rest of the Alaska delegation GOP Rep. Don Young and GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski have said they will support Haaland s confirmation, but Sullivan has stayed mum. Haaland would be the first ever Native American Cabinet secretary.
