I want you to understand the deep connection that the issue of guns and gun violence has with the work of the Luskin School of Public Affairs. Among the other focuses is a focus on Mental Health. Guns are the single biggest killer of women. They are the single biggest cause of successful suicide. It turns out people may try to take their own life more often than we would like, and its a tragedy, but we are not very good at it unless there is a gun present. If there is a gun present, the possibility of fatalities skyrocket. Guns tear at the fabric of american society, but as you will hear in tonights lecture, you can argue that they are written into the fabric of american society, or at least so their advocates and manufacturers would tell us. One is this monumental biography of Frederick Douglass, probably the definitive biography of Frederick Douglass especially with what is going on in the United States in terms of the fight for Racial Justice nobody was more consequential and has been more consequential on the question of race in america than Frederick Douglass, way ahead of his time. He was not only in abolitionist and passionate abolitionist as a former slave but he insisted from the earliest time in the 1840s right through his death toward the end of the Nineteenth Century that equality was the goal and he would brooke no deviation from that. Very clear what the goal was. So many of his words ring true today and i really recommend the biography. It is a long read but really powerful. Beyond the protesters, beyond the building, on chambers street that is some of the graffiti been painted out here by demonstrators. They made one arrest connected to the graffiti connected to that building. The other thing that happened, david, demonstrators clashing with Police Officers who came out here to try to clear the plaza. They were removing barricades. People were hanging on to barricades there was a lot of pushing and shoving. At some point, police, some of them had to use batons to separate themselves from demonstrators. Officers on scene made three arrests including resisting, disorderly conduct, harrassment and criminal tampering f
