(KRBD file photo by Leila Kheiry) The search for the next full-time superintendent of Ketchikan’s school district kicks into high gear Thursday. For roughly six hours, Ketchikan’s school board and representatives of the Association of Alaska School Boards are scheduled to go through applications for the district’s top job. Portions of the meeting will be held behind closed doors, the school board said in a news release. The board says it anticipates narrowing the choices down to three or four finalists with an announcement by the end of the day.

SHAW applies for Board seat

The Ketchikan School Board on Wednesday is set to interview former Board President Trevor Shaw to potentially fill the vacant seat on the board. Shaw was the only person to apply for the spot, left vacant by the resignation of Vice President Sonya Skan earlier this month. The application period closed at 4:30 p.m. last Monday. Board policy states that the board must fill vacant seats within 30 days, and must interview all applicants for the position. The board accepted Skan’s resignation on May 4. Shaw was elected to the School Board in 2013 and served as the board president until 2018. In 2015, while serving on the board and as the chairman of the House District 36 Republicans, Shaw unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly.

BOARD set to meet on SI position

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — The Ketchikan School Board will hold a work session on Wednesday with the Association of Alaska School Boards as part of the Ketchikan School District’s search for a permanent superintendent. The board also will hold a special session on Thursday to interview candidates for the interim superintendent position. Wednesday’s work session will help AASB “to develop the superintendent vacancy recruitment brochure” and will allow both groups to set a timeline for “recruitment, finalist selection, interviews and appointment of a new superintendent,” according to the Ketchikan School District’s email on Tuesday announcing the meetings. The work session will be conducted by videoconference starting at 6 p.m. Board Clerk Kerry Watson said by phone Tuesday that there will not be time for public comment at the start of the work session.
