I Flew Home to India During the Pandemic to Help Care for Family

Altaf Qadri/AP With 24 hours notice, I flew from New York to New Delhi to help my father care for sick family members.  My grandmother s condition began to worsen and we had to find an available hospital bed, but there were very few options.  In the week since I arrived in India, I lost friends and family members all I could do was write condolence messages.  Amitoj Singh is a New York-based journalist who has previously been principal anchor and news editor at India s New Delhi Television.  This is an opinion column. COVID-19: What s happening in India and how are faith groups helping?

Amitoj Singh’s 94-year-old grandmother couldn’t breathe. COVID-19 had taken over her lungs, squeezing out the air, and it was time for her to go to the hospital. But, in Paonta Sahib a small town six hours outside of New Delhi there wasn’t a bed to be had. “She is probably the most influential person (in the town) as a high court judge’s wife,” said Singh, “and even she couldn’t get a bed. We had to drive three hours away.” That trip took place in what Singh describes as a “dilapidated ambulance” with a malfunctioning oxygen tank. When they arrived at the hospital in Sarahan, they discovered a COVID-19 patient who had died there, outside, just moments before.

The thoughts expressed are those of the author.  Eight people were shot dead in Indianapolis last week in another act of senseless gun violence. The fact that four of the eight people killed and two of the five people injured were from the Sikh faith and that about 90% of the workers at the facility are Sikh raised concerns that this was a hate crime targeting the community.

It Is Time America Takes Asian American Policy Concerns Seriously

It is time America takes Asian American policy concerns seriously Mario Tama/Getty Images The increase in violence against Asian Americans has sparked awareness about anti-Asian racism.  This is the moment for the AAPI community to push for policy goals such as data disaggregation.  As an influential voter block, Asian Americans must be taken seriously politically and socially.  Amitoj Singh is a New York based journalist who has previously been Principal Anchor and News Editor at India s New Delhi Television (NDTV).  This is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed are those of the author.  On Monday, March 29, as I was having brunch in Manhattan, about 40 blocks from me, a 65-year-old woman walking down the street was punched, kicked, and disparaged with anti-Asian verbal attacks.
