Led by the UN Human Rights Council, several international human rights organisations have termed the circumstances surrounding Father Stan Swamy’s death as “disturbing”, “inexcusable” and “devastating”.
10 parties seek action
Leaders of 10 Opposition parties, including Sonia Gandhi, NCP s Sharad Pawar and ex-PM HD Deve Gowda, wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking action.
They urged him to direct the government to take action against those responsible for allegedly meting out inhuman treatment to the activist in jail.
The MEA, however, said all actions were strictly in accordance with the law and Father Swamy was arrested and detained by the NIA after following due process.
NEW DELHI: A day after Father Stan Swamy’s death in custody, 10 opposition leaders wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind expressing deep anguish and outrage and demanded his immediate intervention.
Referring to the death of Swamy, held under the UAPA in the Elgar Parishad case, the opposition leaders said that as President of India, Kovind should direct “your government” to act against those responsible for “foisting false cases” on the activist. They said those responsible for his continued detention in jail and for the “inhuman treatment” meted out to him should be held to account.
The letter, signed by opposition leaders, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, former PM H D Deve Gowda, chief ministers Mamata Banerjee, M K Stalin and Hemant Soren, along with Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja, said the President must act in the case of Swamy’s death.

The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) on Tuesday mourned the death of Jesuit priest Stanislaus Lourduswamy, and called him “martyr of the marginalized people.”
The Indian priest popularly known as Fr. Stan Swamy died on Monday, July 5, at the age of 84; he spent the last eight months of his life jailed on terror charges for his activism on behalf of Indian society’s lowest castes.
In a statement on Tuesday, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon, FABC president, said Father Swamy “redefined his priesthood, extending his altar to the streets and hills of those obnoxious corners of injustice.”
