Man accused of waterboarding 11-year-old boy

According to a statement of probable cause filed in Magistrate Court: The Las Cruces Police Department was asked to investigate the alleged abuse after a referral on July 20 from the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department. The referral said a Las Cruces officer was called to Apodaca Park on June 9 after the boy left home because Salas “would hurt him and threatened to kill him.” The boy was returned home after officers saw no marks or bruises on him and Salas denied the claims. The next day, the boy ran away again and was returned home. After police received the referral, they interviewed the boy and his sister on July 22. The boy told police that in September, Salas picked him up by his neck, to the point that his feet were not touching the floor, and squeezed so hard he couldn’t breathe.

La Piñon can be contacted at 575-526-3437.  LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces Police Department arrested and charged a man with five first-degree counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor.  Police said Joshua Ruben Chavez, 43, is accused of raping a 9-year-old girl and taking pictures of her 10-year-old sister s breasts and genitals in 2019. Chavez is facing two misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure along with the five felony counts of sexual penetration of a minor.

Editor s note: This article contains graphic descriptions of violence and gore.  LAS CRUCES - A man charged with first-degree murder will be held in prison without bond after he pleaded not guilty to the charges.   Police accused Joel Arciniega-Saenz, 25, of killing and decapitating a man at Apodaca Park on June 20. At the time, Arciniega-Saenz was out of jail on a $2,000 unsecured bond for a separate incident. An unsecured bond means that a defendant has to pay that money only if they abscond from court hearings. During Tuesday s pretrial detention hearing, Arciniega-Saenz s defense attorney argued that his client should be released.
