City of Savannah Municipal Archives staff For Savannah Morning News National Public Works Week This week is through May 22 is National Public Works Week. Public Works helps maintain a community’s strength by working together to provide an infrastructure of services in transportation, water, wastewater and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and playgrounds, emergency management and first response, solid waste, and right-of-way management. This year’s national theme, “Stronger Together,” challenges us all to think about the role public works plays in creating a great place to live. Please join the Municipal Archives in saying a big thank you to all of the City’s Public Works employees, who work hard every day to make Savannah run smoothly, with a look back through a selection of photographs taken by renowned photographer Jack Leigh circa 1989 for the City’s Research and Budget Department.

The Amish communities of northeast Ohio engage in textbook communal living. Families eat, work and go to church together, and through the pandemic, mask-wearing and social distancing have been spotty. As a result, these communities have experienced some of the state s highest rates of infection and deaths. Nevertheless, health officials are struggling to get residents vaccinated. Holmes County, where half of the population is Amish, has the lowest vaccination rate in Ohio, with just 10% of its roughly 44,000 residents fully vaccinated.
