SAN ANTONIO Ernesto Martinez – or Ernie, as he goes by – was an incredible athlete who played football, ran track and participated in several other sports. All that changed on Feb. 14, when the winter storm struck Texas. I was coming out of work. I closed. My dad told me that there was black ice so that we had to go really slow, he said.
Even going slow, they still hit ice and lost control of the vehicle, flipping several times. I don t remember flying up, but I remember being in the air, seeing the floor, he said. And then I passed out and I woke up on the floor. And from there I ended up I thought I was going to be fine.

SAN ANTONIO The statewide mask mandate has expired, meaning Texans are no longer required to wear a face covering in public unless the businesses they re entering require it.
However, experts say wearing a mask has always been about keeping you and others as safe as possible during the coronavirus pandemic. Even if you get fully vaccinated, you can still carry the virus and not get sick, and easily transmit it to other with possible life-threatening consequences.

SAN ANTONIO Having a baby is very stressful on the mother s body. That is especially the case if the mother has any type of heart problem before, during or even after pregnancy.
If a woman has a pre-existing heart condition the key is finding out about it before she even gets pregnant in order to have the best outcome. One of the problems I see is being overweight which is a common factor here in the south and not knowing what risk factors you should look at even at a young age, said Dr. Ildiko Agoston who is a cardiologist with University Health, and a Professor of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO As the latest coronavirus pandemic surge rages on, the goal for many physicians is to keep patients out of the hospital to lower their risk of death.
When therapeutics like Bamlanivimab, known as a monoclonal antibody, started to be used to treat coronavirus the goal was to treat mostly patients already in the hospital. But, with vaccine news overshadowing the use of these drugs, physicians say they re being extremely under-utlized. The monoclonal antibodies are actually clones of one single white blood cell that s why they are monoclonal, and they are proteins, man-made proteins, to augment or supplement your body his own immune system that is just not producing enough of the antibodies to fight off the disease, said Elliot Mandell, a Senior Vice-President and Chief Pharmacy Officer for University Health
