Data obtained under the Official Information Act reveals a dramatic drop in applications to resolve tenancy disputes over the past decade.
In 2010 there were 5071 cases by tenants and landlords in the Wellington region compared with just 1670 last year, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
Renters United spokesperson Ashok Jacob said the numbers were very concerning. Because the rental market has tightened significantly over the past decade people are less willing to complain and stand up for themselves.
At their landlord’s request, Elizabeth and Jayde watered Gore’s plants and fed her cat, which they later put on a plane to join its owner. Gore had turned off the power at her property, so she asked her tenants to store her placenta in their freezer. “The way she asked made me feel bad, she said she had no one else,” Elizabeth said. The situation worsened in February 2020 when Gore told the couple to sort out their own gas supply. Elizabeth pointed out that this was contrary to the tenancy agreement, but the following day, the gas was disconnected.
Finn Iles moved into a three-bedroom apartment in Cuba Mall last August and said issues at the flat had been relentless: a hole in the ceiling, leaks in the bathroom, extensive mould and dampness and a hot water tap that wouldn’t stop running. Several times maintenance workers had entered the Left Bank property without warning, the 22-year-old said. “We don’t feel safe here.” Waagen said a “challenging set of circumstances” had come up between Te Aro Tenancies and the tenants. “We have proposed some solutions to this situation, and will continue to work on this issue till the problems are resolved.”
