Ajanta Neog made history after she was sworn in as Assam’s first woman finance minister after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday distributed portfolios to 13 members of his cabinet.
The finance ministry, which Sarma held in the Sarbananda Sonowal government, has been allotted to a woman minister for the first time in the state.
GUWAHATI: New Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed office on Monday with a bare-bones 14-member cabinet, including10 from BJP, and a to-do list that gives the battle against Covid-19 top priority and promises a “proactive government” that will fulfil all of BJP’s promises –– from a “rectified NRC” to laws against “love and land jihad”.
Sarma, who held the health portfolio along with finance, education and PWD in the erstwhile Sarbananda Sonowal government, said after being sworn in at the Sankardev Kalakshetra cultural complex that “both the CM and health minister will together together aggressively fight the battle against the pandemic”.

Guwahati, May 11 : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday allocated the finance portfolio to Ajanta Neog, making her the first woman Finance Minister of the northeastern state.
Neog, who was elected to the state Assembly from the Golaghat assembly constituency in eastern Assam, would also hold the social welfare portfolio.
After assuming charge in the finance department, Neog said that Chief Minister Sarma had announced after taking the oath on Monday that the aim of the new government is to make Assam one of the top five states in India in the next five years, and she would work and plan accordingly to achieve the target.

He said that for the last five years, the BJP-led government in the state had been able to win the people’s trust and confidence by bringing in peace, progress, security and development.
“We thank the people for reposing their trust in us and giving us a clear mandate for the second successive term. I urge all the elected members of the alliance to work with dedication and honesty,” he said.
Requesting the MLAs to work not for their personal goals but for the betterment of the society, Sonowal said, “Our aim should be to remain united and dedicate ourselves for service to the society, our state and the nation.”
