Guwahati- To address the surge in the cases of the novel coronavirus in the state, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today after chairing series of high-level meetings decided to ramp up the availability of hospital beds.
The Assam Health minister chaired series of high-level meetings today to ensure that adequate hospital beds are made available for the needy COVID-19 patients as Assam currently suffers from a steep surge in the cases of the novel coronavirus.

Guwahati (Assam) [India], May 5 (ANI): Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday informed that the Ministry of Railways has offered 1500 train coaches equipped with oxygen cylinders to be used as COVID care centre.
Taking to Twitter, the state health minister wrote, In a booster dose of sorts, Ministry of Railways has offered us, 1500 coaches, to be used as part of COVID care centre. These shall be equipped with oxygen cylinders. Visited Guwahati railway station to review it.
He also expressed his gratefulness to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal for the new initiative.

The Guwahati Press Club today wrote an SOS letter to Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking a vaccination camp in the city for journalists older than 45. The press club said journalists of all age groups should be vaccinated as soon as possible. Already, over the past one year, we have lost dozens of journalists due to COVID-19, the latest being senior journalists like Nilakshi Bhattacharya, Aiyushman Dutta and Rohit Sardana, the letter said.

State MLA Ashok Singhal said that as yet there were no reports of casualties.
It is another blow to a country currently reeling before a COVID-19 crisis, with new case records set daily in the past week.
