Some hit songwritersâ work is better known than they are. That may be true for Darrell Scott, who has penned such hits as The Chicksâ âLong Time Gone,â Travis Trittâs âItâs A Great Day To Be Alive,â Sara Evansâ âBorn To Flyâ and the oft-covered âYouâll Never Leave Harlan Alive.â
Thatâs not to say he is anonymous, particularly in Southwest Virginia, where over the past dozen years or so he has performed at FloydFest, Jefferson Center, the Lyric Theatre, Harvester Performance Center and Floyd Country Store.
Scott, a multi-instrumentalist who specializes in deeply fluent guitar playing, is returning to the region for two shows. On Thursday, he hits the Floyd Small Town Summer series at Floydâs Warren G. Lineberry Park. On Saturday, he is on stage at Lexingtonâs Lime Kiln Theater.
The Mountain Fever studio and its family of labels keeps steaming on.
The Floyd County companyâs Americana/folk label, Travianna Records, signed Summer & Bray and has released the duoâs cover of Mr. Misterâs âKyrie.â Siblings Summer (vocals) and Brayden McMahon (banjo, vocals) were part of the Sylva, North Carolina band Mountain Faith, which was a Mountain Fever Records band and a semifinalist on âAmericaâs Got Talent.â
But the act rebranded and joined Mountain Feverâs sister label.
The âKyrieâ cover is their follow-up to an original number, âHeartbeat,â which was a Bluegrass Today chart hit, according to a Mountain Fever news release.

There wasn’t a free square inch of the dance floor at the Floyd Country Store Friday night. Ben Harman and his friends have been coming for years and they couldn’t wait to be back at it.
