Sherm Kavanaugh, 76, founded Kavanaugh s Resort and Restaurant on Sylvan Lake in 1969 with wife Mae. Their 175-seat restaurant became known across Minnesota and beyond for its gourmet food. 30 years ago (1991) Two new supermarkets will open within nine days of each other in Baxter this month. Super One Foods, which already operates a store in east Brainerd, will unveil a 65,000-square-foot store at 1550 Fairview Road. County Market, which also has a store in east Brainerd, will open a 42,000-square-foot store on Hwy 371 north.

Madden spent more than 60 years in the resort business, his name was synonymous with Madden s on Gull Lake, which he co-founded with brother Jack in the 1930s. 30 years ago (1991) Former county sheriff Frank Ball confirmed that he will seek the post of Brainerd police chief, now that Ralph Hitchens has retired. Ball is currently serving as administrator of the NET VI Drug Task Force. If Ball does get the chief s position, both he and Sheriff Dick Ross – who competed in a spirited battle for sheriff – say they can work together amicably.

Ed Vobejda, contest chairman, said that Confidence Learning Center will receive 70 percent of the donations, or $143,140. 30 years ago (1991) It was a stunning weekend for Warrior athletes. Gymnast Julie Beasley won the state Class AA title in vault, scoring a 9.9 of 10.0 from all judges. Lance Hoff finished second in the 50 free at the state swim meet, breaking the school record. And Warrior wrestler Kirk Hayes took third in the 140-pound state Class AA division.

It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
